Alabama football discusses what Jalen Milroe, other QBs showed in Week 1 rout
The cake is still in the oven, right?
Alabama football revealed its Week 2 depth chart on Monday and kept the ‘or’ distinction that separated quarterbacks Jalen Milroe, Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson and Dylan Lonergan on the depth chart. The consistency was expected, even after Milroe’s record-setting five-touchdown performance.
Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said throughout fall camp that the competition wouldn’t be finished on Sept. 2. He told Milroe when naming him the starter that the goal would be for the backups to eventually get some reps. And with a four-touchdown lead at halftime, Milroe delivered room for Buchner and Simpson to make their 2023 debuts.
“I thought both guys handled the situation well,” Saban said of the latter two on Monday. “They executed fairly well. I think it’s a good opportunity for both of them to be able to learn from some of the things that they did, get some really good game experience. I thought they both did a good job.”
Buchner entered in the third quarter and completed three of five passes for 27 yards, the highlight being a 20-yarder to Amari Niblack near midfield. Buchner also ran for a 9-yard touchdown. Simpson completed his only throw for five yards at the goal line before sneaking in for points.
Making his second career start, Milroe dazzled with five touchdowns and 242 yards of offense. He also held onto the ball, making progress from an issue last year with zero giveaways. The quarterback reflected on his performance before reinforcing that he and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees will meet to improve ahead of playing No. 11 Texas.
“I think it was a start,” Milroe said. ” … That’s the one thing that I wanted to do was appreciate the win, number one. But also look in the mirror and try to look at how I could be a better leader. How I could be a better passer? How can I be more efficient? Just overall, just try and improve. I know and I trust the offensive staff to just push me every day to be the best version of myself. Even though I trust Coach Rees to push me. Me and him will get together and try to improve.”
Alabama, a touchdown favorite against Texas, likely won’t be able to rest starters deep into the fourth quarter. The highly-anticipated rematch will kick off at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
