Alabama football depth chart: Final offensive predictions before Western Kentucky

No depth chart is ever set in stone, but the Alabama football depth chart has become clearer by the day.

Preseason camp wraps up this week, the first under new coach Kalen DeBoer, and real football is around the corner. The Crimson Tide will kick off the season by facing Western Kentucky on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. That game will offer the first official glimpse of the Crimson Tide and what the pecking order looks like to start the season.

We won’t know for certain until next week what the depth chart looks like, but clues throughout camp have helped put many of the puzzle pieces together. Details and intel throughout preseason practices have made it easier to discern what the picture looks like at each position.

As preseason camp comes to an end, here’s our prediction for the Alabama offensive depth chart to start the season.

Quarterback

Starter: Jalen Milroe

Reserves: Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, Dylan Lonergan

Analysis: Camp really hasn’t changed the top of this group. Milroe remains the guy and the starter. He had a solid August and has a chance to take the next step in his game this season with DeBoer and new offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan. Simpson also played well in camp and remains the top option behind Milroe. After Milroe and Simpson, Mack and Lonergan round out the position. Those two seem to have more so competed to be the No. 3 quarterback.

Running back

Starter: Jam Miller or Justice Haynes

Reserves: Richard Young, Daniel Hill, Kevin Riley

Analysis: Young could start many places, but here, Alabama has two options ahead of him who have the potential to be elite. Miller and Haynes figure to lead a rushing attack that could be one of the biggest strengths of this team. Young is going to have a chance to help the offense too, though. Miller has been banged up some late in camp, but so long as he’s healthy, he and Haynes could have a special season.

Receiver

Starters: Germie Bernard, Kendrick Law, Kobe Prentice

Reserves: Ryan Williams, Emmanuel Henderson Jr., Cole Adams, Rico Scott, Caleb Odom, Jaren Hamilton, Amari Jefferson, Bubba Hampton

Analysis: No Williams in the starting lineup? Maybe not for the season opener considering the experienced options Alabama has in Bernard, Law and Prentice. But Williams is going to be tough to keep off the field. If he’s not starting the first game, it might not be long before he gets his chance. The hype surrounding him never died down in the preseason. Alabama has several good options at receiver, and it’s quite possible several get quality snaps. How Alabama uses this group will be worth monitoring as the season goes along. Expect big things from Bernard, though. He’s got a chance to flourish after following DeBoer from Washington.

Tight end

Starter: CJ Dippre

Reserves: Robbie Ouzts, Josh Cuevas, Danny Lewis, Ty Lockwood, Jay Lindsey

Analysis: Dippre continues to lead this group and could have a bigger role in the passing game this season. Ouzts is the next option at the position. Sets that call for two tight ends will likely feature Dippre and Ouzts. It’s quite possible we see Cuevas and Lewis some, though.

Offensive line

Starters: Kadyn Proctor (left tackle), Tyler Booker (left guard), Parker Brailsford (center), Jaeden Roberts (right guard), Wilkin Formby (right tackle)

Reserves: Elijah Pritchett, Geno VanDeMark, Miles McVay, Naquil Betrand, Casey Poe, Roq Montgomery, Olaus Alinen, Joseph Ionata, William Sanders

Analysis: Proctor started camp with the second team after transferring back from Iowa, but he regained his starting spot quickly and looks to be the starter there again in his sophomore season. Booker, Brailsford and Roberts have been constants with the first group throughout camp on the interior, until Roberts got hurt in the second scrimmage. DeBoer said he expects Roberts not to miss the first game, but Roberts’ progress will be worth monitoring. If he can’t go, VanDeMark will likely start in his place. The biggest question remains at right tackle where Formby and Pritchett have been competing all camp. They’ve rotated at that spot with the first group most of camp. We’ll give the edge to Formby, but it’s possible the competition continues into the season.
