Alabama football’s A-Day spring game will be played under a different format than in past years. Instead of coaches drafting teams and splitting up the first- and second-teamers, the Tide will pit its offense and defense against each other.

New coach Kalen DeBoer is looking for another improved performance compared to UA’s initial two workouts in Bryant-Denny Stadium. How will a winner be determined this Saturday?

Alabama’s spring game will have a unique scoring system, at least on one side of the ball. The offense will be able to score in its traditional three ways:

Touchdown – 6 points

Extra Point – 1 point

Field Goal – 3 points

The defense will be awarded for various stops, including:

Takeaway – 7 points

Three-and-out – 3 points

Missed Field Goal – 2 points

Punt – 2 points

Alabama’s defenders will also be awarded for fourth-down stops, depending on how many yards the team conceded beforehand. Like under the old system under Nick Saban, the winning team earns a steak meal while beans and hot dogs await the losers.

Stats will be kept via UA officials and distributed through the media. The game will be broadcast at 3 p.m. on ESPN.

“It’s a chance for us to take a next step,” DeBoer said. “A chance for us to evaluate, as well. And so try to really get down to the bare bones of playing some football. It gives us a chance to really also celebrate what we’re doing and where we’re at and enjoy the moment with the fans. So excited to see a packed stadium there and looking forward to seeing everyone come and support our program.”
