Alabama food distributor announces layoffs
An Alabama food distributor plans to lay off more than 60 employees in the coming months, according to a recent notice filed with the state.
Southeastern Food Merchandisers is headquartered in Pelham just south of Birmingham,. The layoffs, scheduled for April 27, will impact 62 employees, per the WARN notice.
Representatives for the company did not respond to requests for comment from AL.com.
In mid-February, Southeastern Food Merchandisers said in a Facebook post that open interviews for jobs at its headquarters were canceled.
Founded in 1983, Southeastern Food Merchandisers distributes food products in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia and northern Florida. Its clients include Jack’s Family Restaurants, Wendy’s and other fast-food restaurants, per its website.
Federal law requires large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.
The expected job cuts bring Alabama’s tally of employees impacted by mass layoffs in 2025 to more than 1,700.
