Alabama faces severe storms this weekend: Time to get ready for overnight weather threat
Severe storms will be possible in parts of Alabama over the next three days, according to forecasters.
Strong to severe storms will be possible in north and north-central Alabama starting late tonight or early Saturday morning. Additional rounds will be possible Saturday and Sunday.
The strongest storms could have damaging winds, hail and heavy rain. A tornado or two will also be possible, according to the National Weather Service.
No organized severe weather is expected for south Alabama through the weekend.
The weather service thinks that today will be mostly rain-free with hot temperatures. Storms aren’t expected to enter the picture until late tonight.
Because storms could affect the state during the overnight hours it’s important to make sure you have a way of getting severe weather warnings that could wake you up if needed.
Some of the ways to do this are by getting a weather radio or a phone app set to your location.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 3 out of 5 (enhanced) risk for severe weather for a very small part of northwest Alabama later tonight.
A larger area in north Alabama will have a Level 2 (slight) risk, and a Level 1 (marginal) risk includes the rest of north Alabama as well as the northern part of central Alabama (see the severe weather forecast in the map above).
A Level 3 risk means numerous severe storms will be possible. A Level 2 risk means scattered severe storms will be possible, and isolated severe storms will be possible in the Level 1 risk area.
The National Weather Service expects a cluster of strong to severe storms to move into north Alabama late tonight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Those storms are expected to track to the south and east during the overnight hours. Forecasters think they will lose intensity as they do so.
Those storms could have strong winds capable of knocking down trees and power lines, hail, heavy rain and a tornado or two, especially in northwest Alabama.
Occasional rain and storms could linger through Saturday morning, but then there could be a lull before more storms potentially develop during the afternoon and evening.
A few of those afternoon storms could also become severe, with damaging winds and hail, according to the weather service.
Here’s the severe weather outlook for Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 1 risk for areas from Troy and Greenville northward:
A large part of Alabama will have a Level 1 severe weather risk on Saturday.SPC
The weather service noted that it will be a “conditional” threat on Saturday, which means severe storms aren’t a sure thing. But if storms do develop they will have the potential to reach severe limits.
The Storm Prediction Center has also added another Level 1 severe weather risk for many of the same areas for Sunday.
Here is the severe weather forecast for Sunday:

All of north and most of central Alabama will have a Level 1 severe weather risk on Sunday (areas in dark green).SPC
The weather service said more details on the timing for potential storms on Sunday will become clear later today.
Additional chances for rain and storms will continue into next week, and a cold front is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday, which could also bring another chance for storms.
So far no severe weather is in the forecast for Alabama past Sunday.
