Alabama faces Level 2 severe weather threat on Thursday: When and where to expect storms
A Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather has been added to the forecast for part of Alabama for Thursday.
The National Weather Service said wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail will be possible with the strongest storms. The tornado risk is low.
Rain could be possible during the day on Thursday, but any stronger storms could approach the state during the afternoon.
Storms are expected to develop along and ahead of an approaching cold front, and they could linger into Friday.
Storms could enter west Alabama by 3 p.m. Thursday and track east and south into the nighttime hours. Forecasters think they should lose intensity as they do so.
The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 2 (slight) risk on Thursday for parts of north and west Alabama, including Huntsville, Florence, Decatur, Hartselle, Russellville and Hamilton.
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
Areas to the south and east, including Gadsden, Cullman, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Talladega, will have a Level 1 (marginal) risk on Thursday. That means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
Rain and storms will also be possible in southwest Alabama, but no severe weather is expected. Southeast Alabama may not get any rain at all on Thursday.
Rain and storms will also be possible on Friday, but the Storm Prediction Center isn’t expecting severe storms, at least so far.
However, the weather service said there will be a low chance of strong to severe storms on Friday as the cold front pushes through the area.
Here’s the outlook for Friday:

The weather service said storm chances could last into Saturday, but severe weather is not expected.
