Alabama faces Level 1 severe storm risk Friday: What to expect

The southern half of Alabama will be the place to watch for severe weather on Friday.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe weather today for that part of the state.

A Level 1 risk means isolated severe storms will be possible.

The strongest storms could have wind gusts up to 60 mph, lots of lightning and heavy rain.

Areas that don’t get rain could again heat up, and heat advisories are in place for parts of south and west Alabama today:

The Alabama counties in orange will be under heat advisories today.

Storms moved through parts of north and central Alabama on Friday morning, and the National Weather Service has gotten reports of downed trees and power lines and flooding.

More storms could develop later this afternoon, and it’s those that could reach severe limits.

The weather service said the most likely time for the second round of storms today will be from noon through the evening hours.

Storms will be possible across Alabama through the weekend, but so far the Storm Prediction Center doesn’t have Alabama included in any severe weather forecasts after today.
