Alabama eight-year-old dies after playing with gun with younger brother

An eight-year-old boy has died from a gunshot wound after playing with a gun with a younger sibling.

The young boy was playing with a loaded gun alongside his four-year-old brother in the bedroom when the gun discharged Saturday, according to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver.

The child’s mother was unloading things, including the gun, from her car and left them on the front lawn, according to the sheriff. She took one child to run an errand and left the two younger boys with their 15-year-old sister, who was in the house but not in the bedroom at the time the gun went off.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office got a call about the incident around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

The child was taken to Russellville Hospital and airlifted to a hospital in Birmingham, where the child later died.

The sheriff’s office is investigating.
