Alabama drought gets worse: Any rain in the forecast?

Alabama’s ongoing drought got worse last week despite some rain.

The U.S. Drought Monitor released its weekly look at drought conditions across the United States on Thursday, and it shows the worst-of-the-worst drought conditions expanding in Alabama, which is in its worst drought since 2016.

Areas considered in exceptional drought — Level 4 out of 4 drought levels — increased from 1.38 percent to 5.97 percent, according to this week’s report, which was compiled on Tuesday and released on Thursday.

Areas in the worst drought were in northeast and northwest Alabama, which didn’t see much rain in the past week.

Here’s a look at estimated rainfall over the past seven days:

Areas in exceptional drought include parts of Marion, Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale, Morgan, Marshall, Madison, Jackson, DeKalb and Cherokee counties.

Level 3, or extreme drought, also gained more of a foothold in Alabama in the past week, according to the report. Now more than half of the state, 50.75 percent, is in extreme drought, an increase from 37.54 percent last week.

Areas in Level 2 and Level 1 drought also increased in the past week, according to the report.

What didn’t change was the small part of the state, 0.44 percent, that wasn’t considered to be in drought at all. That small area was in part of Lee County in the eastern part of central Alabama.

There will be a few chances for rain — not a drought-busting rain but rain nonetheless — coming in the next few days.

A cold front will bring a chance for showers on Friday into Saturday, and then another system will bring more rain chances from Monday night into Tuesday, along with a chance of a few severe storms as well.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center is forecasting parts of Alabama to get about an inch of rain in the next seven days:
