Alabama Democratic Party likens Tuberville to Hitler in tweet condemned by anti-Semitism group

The Alabama Democratic Party was admonished by a group fighting anti-Semitism after it likened Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s views on the military to Adolph Hitler in a tweet that included a photo of the Nazi leader.

The party was responding to an anti-Tuberville ad that included a clip of Alabama’s senior senator criticizing the American military as weak and that “all this wokeness” is “infiltrating our military.”

“Tuberville is speaking in code here. Time to call it what it is. ‘Wokeness’ refers to a military that has Black, brown, red, yellow, and female leaders. He prefers his military to look like Nazi Germany’s Third Reich. Say what you mean @SenTuberville,” the party’s account on X, the social media site formerly known on Twitter, tweeted Tuesday.

The X account belonging to the Anti-Defamation League’s office in Atlanta condemned the Alabama Democratic Party’s comparison, suggesting the tweet diminishes the impact of the Holocaust.

“Say what you will about another person’s politics, but drawing Hitler and Nazi comparisons – thereby trivializing the Holocaust – is not the answer,” the ADL Southeast tweeted.

The Alabama Democratic Party could not immediately be reached for comment, but Chairman Randy Kelley told CBS 42 that he disagreed with the tweet, which he claimed was posted by a technology director for the party.

He also said the post would be removed, but it was still up as of Thursday morning.

Tuberville addressed the tweet in a media call with reporters earlier Wednesday.

“We don’t need to be indoctrinating our young men and women in the military when their number one objective is to protect the American citizens. It’s just as easy as that. So I really don’t care what the Democrats call me,” he said, according to CBS 42.
