Gov. Kay Ivey on Sunday issued a state of emergency for 25 Alabama counties as the state this week faces a threat of winter storms.

The counties include: Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

“We are anticipating unusually cold temperatures in Alabama this week, so I am urging everyone to be prepared, take caution traveling and stay weather aware,” Ivey said.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories will go into effect for parts of north and central Alabama as soon as tonight.

Parts of northern Alabama could see 2 to 6 inches of snow and some ice from tonight into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Winter storm warnings were expanded to cover all of north Alabama on Sunday afternoon, including Huntsville, and more of central Alabama was added to winter weather advisories, including Birmingham. More additions could be possible in the future.
