Alabama DB enters transfer portal days before A-Day

Jahquez Robinson has entered the transfer portal, he tweeted on Tuesday night.

The Alabama defensive back had been a special teams contributor and played in six games last year, but Robinson is looking for a new school ahead of the program’s annual spring scrimmage, which comes after the spring window opened last weekend.

Robinson, listed at 6-foot-2, 199-pounds, is a redshirt junior from Jacksonville, Fla. He had appeared in seven games after entering the program in 2020 as a four-star recruit in the secondary and on special teams. He made two tackles in his career, including a sack against Vanderbilt on Sept. 24, 2022. The news was first reported by On3′s Matt Zenitz and confirmed by Robinson on Twitter.

Alabama has had 16 players enter the portal since last season ended with a win over Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl. Tight end Elijah Brown entered on Monday. Robinson is just the second defensive player to leave the program. Another defensive back, Khyree Jackson, ended up at Oregon after entering the portal, withdrawing his name but re-entring in December.

On Saturday, the Crimson Tide has its A-Day spring game at 2 p.m. inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. The secondary, which has been tested this spring, is likely to feature freshman and five-star prospect Caleb Downs at safety. Alabama is working through many parts of its rotation ahead of the fall and has yet to release a depth chart.

Players have until April 30 to put their names into the portal, making them eligible to be contacted by opposing teams. Due to a rule passed within the Southeastern Conference in 2021, athletes can’t immediately be eligible should they transfer within the SEC.
