Alabama creamery brings back chef-inspired flavors

Last year’s “Local Chef Series” at Big Spoon Creamery went so well that the small-batch Alabama ice cream company is bringing it back for an encore.

Beginning in November and continuing through the end of March, the Birmingham-based creamery – which has shops in Avondale, Homewood and Huntsville – will collab with a different Alabama chef to create a new flavor of the month.

The first chef-inspired flavor, a sage and cornbread creation from Birmingham chef Jonathan Harrison, will be available at all three Big Spoon Creamery locations starting this Friday, Nov. 1.

An accompanying pop-up event at Big Spoon’s Avondale location is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. That event will include hors d’oeuvres and a composed sundae made with Harrison’s featured flavor.

“We are thrilled to bring back our local chef series for a second year,” Ryan O’Hara, who co-owns Big Spoon Creamery with his wife, Geri-Martha O’Hara, said in a media release. “We spent a great deal of time considering a number of worthy candidates, and we ultimately settled on this list because they have three things in common: They are friends who we have great relationships with, each is doing really interesting and unique work, and we have immense respect for each of them.

“We are excited to highlight each one of them and showcase their unique approach to food through our collaborative ice cream flavors.”

Here are the chefs scheduled for the upcoming months in the series:

December: Ryan Westover of Pizza Grace.

January: Jesús Méndez of Salud.

February: Roscoe Hall.

March: Wil Drake of Hero.

The flavors for each of those months and the details for those pop-up events will be announced later on Big Spoon Creamery’s social media platforms.

The O’Haras, who met while working for Birmingham restaurateurs Frank and Pardis Stitt at their Bottega restaurant, launched their small-batch ice cream business at a pop-up event in the driveway of their house in Bluff Park in 2014.

They opened their first brick-and-mortar shop in Avondale in 2017 and a second one in Homewood two years later. They expanded into Huntsville in 2023.

AL.com ranked Big Spoon Creamery No. 1 on its 2023 list of the Top 5 Birmingham ice cream shops and No. 2 on its statewide list of the Top 10 Alabama ice cream shops.
