Alabama couple arrested after 500 gallons of oil dumped on roads took 37 tons of sand to clear

Lawrence County authorities say it took about 37 tons of sand to soak up oil spilled on various roads by a couple who currently face misdemeanor charges.

The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers began receiving calls of oil on roads in the eastern part of the county at about 6 p.m. Saturday. In all, about 33 miles of roads reportedly were coated in oil, with the trail crossing into Morgan County and entering Decatur city limits on Central Parkway.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Lawrence County Road Department expended almost 70 hours of labor cleaning up the oil to make roads passable.

Tips and home security camera videos indicated an early 90′s model blue GMC pickup truck, pulling a utility trailer with a 500 gallon container on the back, was responsible.

A man and woman from Courtland were arrested Monday in Decatur. Both are charged with criminal littering and criminal mischief, with more charges possible. Bond has been set at $2,500 each.
