Alabama congressman posts ‘Appeal to Heaven’ flag shortly before Trump verdict

An Alabama congressmen posted the controversial “Appeal to Heaven” flag as reports circulated that a New York jury has reached a verdict in the hush money trial of former President Donald Trump.

Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, tweeted the flag without any context at 3:37 p.m. Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the congressman could not immediately be reached to elaborate on the tweet, which featured an image of the “Appeal to Heaven” flag:

The flag has drawn attention after the New York Times reported that flag was flying over the New Jersey beach home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito last summer. The paper previously reported an inverted American flag was flown at Alito’s Virginia home after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Both flags were carried by rioters who violently stormed the Capitol in January 2021 echoing Trump’s false claims of election fraud.

Alito said he was unaware that the upside-down flag was flying above his house until it was called to his attention. “As soon as I saw it, I asked my wife to take it down, but for several days, she refused,” he wrote in nearly identical letters to Democrats in the House and Senate.

Alito said his wife made the decision to fly the “Appeal to Heaven” flag.

Moore later posted a statement on the guilty verdict.

“This will go down in history as a sad day for America. This verdict is a travesty of justice in a kangaroo court, and it proves Joe Biden’s sole focus is not to help the American people, but instead to weaponize against his political opponents to help his reelection during a failing administration,” he said.

“Americans will be outraged by this obvious weaponization, because they now know that anyone can be targeted,” Moore continued. “They deserve better than a president who convicts his opponent because he’s too afraid to face him at the ballot box.”

Rep. Dale Strong, R-Monrovia, who attended the former president’s trial and stood with Trump outside the courthouse, said he was “disheartened by the verdict.

“I strongly believe that these charges would not have been brought against Donald Trump had he not sought the office of the president,” Strong said in a statement.

“Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg brought this case because of politics, not justice,” Strong continued. “It is clear Democrats weaponized our court system to try to undermine President Trump.”

Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Aderholt, accused prosecutors of being swayed by politics to perform legal gymnastics that led to the guilty verdicts.

“The prosecutors in this case, with I believe help from the bench, had to take the law and make origami out of it to try and get the verdict they wanted,” he tweeted. “This was not about justice. This was about politics. This will be overturned on appeal. ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT.”

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, said Bragg “made a mockery of the American justice system.

“Today’s verdict is disheartening for our country, but I am hopeful that Americans can rectify this injustice on Election Day,” he said.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl, echoing the sentiments of the state’s Republican congressional delegation, said the party “fully stands behind Donald Trump.

“The leftist-inspired court case against him is clearly politically motivated. The facts surrounding this entire situation date back to 2016. These Democrat elected officials had eight years to bring charges but chose to act only when Donald Trump started leading Joe Biden in the polls. The justice system should never be used as a political weapon, and we are deeply disappointed by what we have seen throughout this case,” he said.

“It is crucial to recognize that one of the true enemies of democracy is the misuse of the justice system to target political opponents,” Wahl continued. “With the conviction of Donald J. Trump, it is evident that our country is heading in a very dangerous direction. This is not how a republic or a democracy should be run. The conviction of a former president, especially one who is a current candidate for the presidency, sets a troubling precedent.
