Alabama commits, local standouts compete in UA All-America Game

Even for high schoolers, it’s bowl season.

Being a top recruit often means the season extends into the new year as all-star contests and showcases pull them across the country. Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla. kicked off 2023 with the latest: the Under Armour Next All-America Game. Seven members of Alabama football’s top-rated recruiting class performed live on ESPN2. A set of other Yellowhammer state standouts also took part.

Among the Tide signees, Florida running back Richard Young fumbled twice, but still produced 25 yards on eight touches. Texas four-star wideout Jalen Hale snagged three catches for 15 yards.

Defensively, defensive lineman Jordan Renaud made five solo tackles, among the game’s leaders. Desmond Ricks, the last five-star to join the 2023 class, recorded four tackles. Other rostered players set for Tuscaloosa next fall included defensive back Tony Mitchell, offensive linemen Olaus Alinen and Miles McVay. Defensive linemen Qua Russaw, James Smith and Hunter Osborne, cornerback Jahlil Hurley and quarterback Dylan Lonergan were not in attendance but were selected for the game.

Michigan State commit and Thompson offensive lineman Stanton Ramil helped seal a block for Team Phantom’s first touchdown, a 13-yard run by Texas-commit Cedric Baxter Jr. Ramil’s high school teammate, Clemson five-star Peter Woods, batted a pass at the line to set up an interception. Gardendale rusher and future Florida Gator Kelby Collins recorded two sacks for Team Speed. Montgomery Catholic’s Gabe Russo punted and future Michigan receiver and Central-Phenix City alum Karmello English had a catch.

Another set of Alabama commits, including five stars Caleb Downs and Justice Keeley, are set to play in the All-American Bowl on Jan. 7.
