Alabama cockfighting arena with stadium seats, concessions busted
Ten people were arrested after authorities uncovered an elaborate cockfighting operation that included stadium seating and concessions in Alabama thanks to a confidential tip.
The arrests in Grand Bay included Darrel Zemon Jackson, whose property was used for the cockfighting ring, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office told Fox 10.
Jackson and nine others were arrested after sheriff’s deputies were led to the property last summer.
Last week, Jackson, 64 pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals.
He admitted to earning $200 for each cockfighting event at his property, the sheriff’s office said.
Jackson’s attorney claimed to Fox 10 that his client was not involved in gambling and did not earn a percentage of any bets placed on the roosters that fought in the Grand Bay arena.
The sheriff’s office said the operation included stadium-style seating and concessions such as hot dogs and chicken fingers. The agency believes the ring also operates in Louisiana and Mississippi.
More than 60 roosters were recovered from the operation and taken to animal control to be rehomed.
Last week, cockfighting charges against several defendants were dropped because of lack of evidence, Fox 10 reported.
The nine others besides Jackson who were charged include:
