Alabama church sustains extensive damage in New Year’s Day fire

Fire engulfed a Decatur church early this morning, causing extensive damage, the pastor announced on Facebook.

Sean DeMars, the pastor of Sixth Avenue Community Church, said he received a call about 4:30 a.m. about the fire.

“Unfortunately, the fire was not small,” DeMars said in a Facebook post. “The entire meeting hall was consumed, and the rest of the building incurred significant smoke and water damage.”

Decatur Fire and Rescue continues to investigate after responding at about 2:37 a.m. and extinguishing the fire, WHNT reported.

“The investigator on the scene said that the fire was caused by a wall heater in the foyer at the main meeting hall entrance,” DeMars said.

The church announced an impromptu gathering in the church parking lot this morning.
