Alabama chefs, restaurant shut out at 2024 James Beard Awards
For nearly two decades, Alabama has been well represented at the James Beard Awards, but for only the second time in 17 years, no chefs or restaurants from the state are among the finalists for the food and restaurant world’s most coveted award.
Four chefs and one restaurant from the state had been among the James Beard Awards semifinalists revealed in January, but none was among the 2024 finalists announced today in a live ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C.
It is the first time since 2019 that Alabama has not had a finalist for the annual culinary awards that are championed as “the Oscars of the food world.”
The semifinalists from Alabama were:
Chanah Willis of Last Call Baking in Birmingham for Emerging Chef.
Kelsey Barnard Clark of KBC in Dothan for Best Chef: South.
Rob McDaniel of Helen in Birmingham for Best Chef: South.
Arwen Rice of Red or White in Mobile for Best Chef: South.
The Hope Farm in Fairhope for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program.
This year’ restaurant and chef winners will be announced at the 2024 James Beard Awards ceremony on June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
