A Madison man who was a teenager when he was charged with capital murder in the drug-related shootings of two men found dead in a car in 2017 was found not guilty of the charges Friday, according to court records.

Jacob Gideon Copeland, who was 19 when he was arrested on capital murder charges in the slayings of Damian Blake Ricketts, 21, of Hazel Green, and Devin Edward Richard, 22, of Huntsville, was ordered by Limestone County Circuit Court Judge B. Chadwick Wise to be “released immediately” from the county jail after the jury acquitted him of the charges, records showed.

Copeland, now 24, was identified as a suspect after investigators learned he was the last person who communicated with the victims.

The killings were believed to be drug related, authorities said.

Heroin, marijuana and xanax pills were found inside the car on Analicia Drive along with the victims’ bodies, authorities said at the time of the slayings. One victim was shot three times in the head; The other man was shot six times, suffering injuries to the head and torso.
