Alabama bus driver arrested for hitting special needs student with belt, police say
A Tuscaloosa City Schools bus driver is accused of assaulting a special needs student in an incident captured on video.
Samuel L. Jones, 74, is charged with a felony count of assault/willful abuse of a child, Tuscaloosa police announced Friday. They identified the victim as a non-verbal 17-year-old girl.
During a routine review of bus surveillance footage, Tuscaloosa City Schools transportation staff found video of the incident that reportedly happened at 3:43 p.m. Wednesday between Jones and the teen student.
Police spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor said the footage showed Jones stopping the bus and physically assaulting the student by striking her multiple times with his belt and hand as she remained secured in her seat belt.
Transportation staff immediately notified a school resource officers who contacted the victim’s mother and forwarded the evidence to the Tuscaloosa Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
Investigators obtained a warrant that day and took Jones into custody Friday morning.
He is no longer employed by the school system, Taylor said.
Investigators have found no evidence suggesting other students were harmed, Taylor said.
“The swift action taken by school transportation staff in monitoring bus footage,’’ she said, “and reporting the incident demonstrates our shared commitment to student safety.’’
