Alabama breezes past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi despite no points from Brandon Miller
Alabama breezed past its first-round opponent Thursday in the NCAA tournament without its star player scoring a single point.
Brandon Miller shot 0-for-5 and did not make any trips to the free-throw line in 19 minutes on the floor of the No. 1 seed Tide’s 96-75 win over No. 16 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. But Alabama continued to flex its ability to win in other ways, starting 8-of-11 on its three pointers to flood the Islanders in the opening minutes in Birmingham then have its bench carry the load in the second half.
Alabama advances to Saturday’s second round, when it will meet No. 8 seed Maryland in Legacy Arena. The time of the game is expected to be released late Thursday night. The Terrapins defeated the South regions’ No. 9 seed, West Virginia, earlier Thursday in Birmingham.
Thursday marked the only game without points this season for Miller, a consensus second-team All-American who scored double-digit points in 32 of the Tide’s first 33 games. His lowest output came Dec. 10, when he scored eight points but the Tide beat No. 1-ranked Houston on the road.
The 19 minutes Miller played were also a season low. His previous low was 21 in a blowout Feb. 18 win over Georgia.
Although he shot 0-for-3 in the first half, Miller tied forward Nick Pringle for Alabama’s team lead before halftime with five rebounds. Alabama’s offense in the first half instead came from Noah Clowney and Mark Sears, who combined for 23 points on 6-of-8 three-point shooting before halftime.
The Tide had six different players connect on three pointers in the first half, entering the locker room shooting 10-of-17 (59 percent) from beyond the arc. With its bench seeing significant time in the second half, Alabama shot 5-of-16 (29 percent) after halftime. It was also out-rebounded by Corpus Christi, 28-24, in the second half.
Pringle played 21 minutes for Alabama, leading the team with 19 points and 15 rebounds off the bench.
Alabama, which built a double-digit lead in the first 12 minutes and never lost it, also dealt with foul trouble among its starters. Clowney picked up his third foul with more than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, and Miller committed three fouls in a seven-minute stretch spanning into the second half. Charles Bediako also went to the bench with four fouls and about 10 minutes remaining in the game, which was largely decided by that point.
Alabama’s 96 points were its seventh-most of the season.
Alabama last met the Terrapins in the second round of the 2021 NCAA tournament in Indianapolis, when the Tide shot 49 percent on three pointers to run away with a 96-77 win. Maryland was coached by Mark Turgeon that season but is now coached by Kevin Willard, in his first season after leaving Seton Hall.
