Alabama breaks school, SEC records in NCAA Tournament win over Charleston

Alabama basketball put on an offensive showcase Friday, scoring 109 points against Charleston to open the NCAA Tournament. The No. 4-seeded Crimson Tide broke a school record in the process.

Entering the game, the record was 101 against New Orleans in 1987, though that had been vacated. The non-vacated was 97 against Xavier in 1986, both under head coach Wimp Sanderson.

That wasn’t the only record to fall victim to the Tide’s scoring onslaught on Friday. The Tide also broke the SEC mark for most 100-point games in a season.

The Charleston victory was Alabama’s 10th such game of the 2023-24 campaign. UA had previously been tied at nine with the 1995-96 Kentucky team, which won the national title that season under head coach Rick Pitino.

As of the end of UA’s game only two other teams had scored over 100 points in a tournament game this season. Interestingly enough, both of those came in the Florida-Colorado game earlier in the day.

As part of a difficult slate of first round games for the SEC, the Buffaloes took down the Gators 102-100. Other high scoring teams in the first round included Texas A&M, which put up 98 in a win over Nebraska, Charleston in its losing effort to Alabama and Kansas, which put up 93 to beat Samford on Thursday.

Alabama will face the winner of Friday night’s matchup between St. Mary’s and Grand Canyon. That second-round game is scheduled for Sunday in Spokane.
