SEC Championship odds preview: Alabama to beat Georgia (+160 or better)

Alabama and Georgia have been dominating conference foes in the second half of the season, setting up a highly-anticipated SEC Championship.

The Crimson Tide have defeated Tennessee, LSU, and Kentucky by at least two possessions. Georgia won a tight matchup against Missouri before decimating Ole Miss and Tennessee by an average of 31 points.

Both squads are performing at exceptionally high levels on both sides of the ball. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide rank first and second, respectively, in the SEC in points allowed per game. Offensively, both squads score 36+ points per game, and LSU is the only SEC team outpacing UGA and Alabama.

Outstanding quarterbacking has been instrumental to each team’s success.

Stetson Bennett left massive shoes for Carson Beck to fill, and he’s been up to the challenge. Beck has yet to throw for less than 250 yards in a game and has zero multi-interception outings.

Jalen Milroe took a bit longer to develop but has instilled confidence in the Crimson Tide faithful that he can lead the team back to the CFP. Milroe’s accuracy on deep throws combined with his mobility makes Alabama a threat to find the endzone at any moment.

Stymying Beck is the key to Alabama reclaiming the SEC Championship; specifically, forcing the Bulldogs off the field on third downs.

Georgia leads the nation in third-down conversion rate, moving the chains on 56.9% of its attempts. Forcing UGA punts would keep Beck out of rhythm and could cause him to struggle for the first time this season.

College Football Playoff odds: Alabama to make the CFP (+180 or better)

It’s inconceivable to think Alabama would miss out on the College Football Playoff if the Crimson Tide are victorious in the Iron Bowl and take out Georgia in the SEC Championship.

The winner of Michigan vs. Ohio State will undoubtedly steamroll Iowa in the conference championship, making a Big Ten representative all but guaranteed. With the Wolverines and Buckeyes each occupying top-four spots in the latest CFP rankings, their Week 13 meeting should eliminate the losing team and create an opening for a new contender.

Florida State remains undefeated with matchups against Florida and Louisville in the ACC Championship on tap. However, Jordan Travis’ season-ending injury severely hurts the Seminoles’ odds of winning out, but if they finish the year 13-0, FSU should earn a spot in the playoff.

Assuming Oregon beats Oregon State this week and goes on to play Washington in the Pac-12 Championship, the winning squad would elevate into a CFP finalist. The Ducks are currently on the outside looking in at No. 6, while the Huskies swapped places with FSU in the latest CFP rankings, moving to No. 4.

Alabama is ranked behind Texas due to the Longhorns’ win at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Week 2. But if the Crimson Tide take down the reigning National Champions in the SEC title game, the committee may be forced to overlook Texas’ victory in favor of Alabama.
