Alabama beats No. 3 Vanderbilt 2-1 to claim SEC weekend series
A tumultuous week for Alabama baseball ended on a high note Saturday, as the Crimson Tide beat No. 3 Vanderbilt 2-1 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to claim two of three in the SEC series.
Mac Guscette’s solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the winning margin for the Crimson Tide, which improves to 32-16 overall, 12-13 in the SEC. The Commodores (34-14, 17-8) loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Davis Diaz grounded out to end the game.

Alabama won Thursday’s series opener 11-2, just hours after head coach Brad Bohannon was fired amid a gambling scandal. Vanderbilt took Friday’s Game 2, 4-1.
On Saturday, Vanderbilt struck first on Diaz’s RBI double in the third. Alabama tied the game in the fourth on Drew Williamson’s solo homer.
That 1-1 score stood until the eighth, when Guscette took an 0-1 pitch from Vanderbilt reliever Thomas Schultz over the left-field wall. Guscette returned to the lineup this weekend after being briefly hospitalized when he took a wild pitch off the neck while catching last Sunday against LSU.
Kade Woods (4-1) got the win with two scoreless innings in relief of Jacob McNairy, who allowed just a run on four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Alton Davis pitched around a single, a walk and a hit batter in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.
Schultz (2-1) took the loss, getting just one out before allowing Guscette’s go-ahead homer. Commodores starter Devin Futrell allowed just a run on four hits in seven innings.
Alabama faces Troy on Tuesday in Montgomery before returning to SEC play at Texas A&M on Friday.
