Alabama basketball transfer Jaykwon Makel Walton arrested for marijuana in car with gun, Tuscaloosa police say
A former G.W. Carver-Montgomery prep star who last month announced his transfer to the Crimson Tide men’s basketball team was arrested in Tuscaloosa over the weekend.
Jaykwon Makel Walton, 21, was among two people arrested Saturday night while police were investigating a large crowd gathered.
Tuscaloosa police received multiple complaints from residents about a large number of vehicles parked in their parking lots at apartment complexes off the Strip, said TPD spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor.
Officers approached an occupied vehicle in the 400 block of Reed Street at 10:11 p.m. The officers smelled marijuana and asked the three men to exit the car.
Walton, who was a front seat passenger, informed an officer of a loaded firearm under his seat, Taylor said.
While retrieving the firearm, the officer noticed a rolling tray, a baggie containing approximately 20 grams of marijuana and a half-rolled blunt in the passenger side floorboard.
Officers located two more loaded weapons in the vehicle and another baggie containing 12 grams of marijuana that belonged to back-seat passenger Kameron Deshawn Harris, 21, of Bessemer.
Harris and Walton were both charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and released after posting $500 bond. The driver was released with no charges.
An Alabama spokesperson did not immediately respond to an AL.com request for comment about the arrest.
A 6-foot-7 guard from Wichita State, Walton in March announced his transfer to the University of Alabama.
Walton is from the Pike Road community in Montgomery County. He led Carver to a 6A state title in 2018.
Walton is a Columbus, Georgia native who began his college career playing for Georgia before spending a junior college season at Shelton State in Tuscaloosa in 2021-22.
A four-star recruit in the 2019 high school class, Walton initially committed to Mississippi State before beginning his college career at Georgia, where he played in seven games as a freshman.
Walton entered the NCAA transfer portal two games into the 2020-21 season, then enrolled at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.
He played one season at Shelton State and initially planned to transfer to Mississippi State as the nation’s top-rated junior college recruit before instead transferring to Wichita State.
The 6-foot-7, 206 pound Walton started 27 of 28 games for the Shockers last season, averaging 32.3 minutes per game and 13.9 points per game.
In order to play immediately at Alabama this fall, Walton either would need to be a graduate transfer or be granted an NCAA waiver.
Because Walton had already transferred, he would not otherwise be immediately eligible to play as an undergraduate for Alabama.
