Alabama basketball suspends forward Nick Pringle indefinitely
Alabama men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats announced on Friday that forward Nick Pringle has been “suspended indefinitely” for conduct detrimental to the team.
“Nothing serious off the court or anything, just in-house,” Oats told reporters in the Coleman Coliseum media room. “There’s a standard we want our guys to uphold, and he wasn’t upholding it. I still love Nick, and hopefully, he can get himself figured out with the team shortly.”
Pringle had appeared in each of No. 23 Alabama’s first seven games. He started all but Tuesday night’s contest, a loss to Clemson at home. Like most of the UA roster, Oats had challenged Pringle, a second-year player, for more effort on the defensive end. In Pringle’s case, he recorded three blocks, averaging 6.0 points and shooting 81% from the field.
Pringle transferred to Alabama from Dodge City (Kansas) Community College after a season at Wofford. He entered as the No. 2 JUCO prospect per 247Sports and developed behind Alabama’s stacked frontcourt of Charles Bediako and Noah Clowney.
Appearing in 36 games, Pringle shot 84.7% from the field. He averaged 3.5 points and 3.1 rebounds across eight minutes. His best performance came in Birmingham in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament against Texas A&M-Corpus Cristi. He produced one of his two double-doubles with 19 points and 15 rebounds. It was a moment of promise and was planned to be followed up this year with both Bediako and Clowney opting to go pro.
Instead, Pringle and the rest of Alabama has struggled defensively in its 5-2 start. The Tide has allowed at least 80 points in three straight games. Against Clemson, Pringle was replaced in the starting lineup with Mo Wague, a transfer who had been injured during the preseason.
“Pringle plays 21 minutes and only gets one shot attempt. He’s one of the best field goal percentage shooters. He takes shots you should make and he makes them. We’ve got to get him more shots, whether it’s ball screens. We got him the one, and he goes 1-for-1,” Oats said on Tuesday night.
