Alabama basketball injury update: Latest on Grant Nelson and Jarin Stevenson

Jarin Stevenson was a little surprised he was able to reenter the game. The Alabama basketball forward went down holding his left wrist beneath the basket in the first half of UA’s NCAA Tournament win over Robert Morris Friday.

Stevenson was in obvious pain as he left the floor and headed to the locker room at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. However, he returned with his wrist taped.

The North Carolina native said Saturday that he was doing better and should be good to go for Sunday’s second-round matchup with Saint Mary’s.

“It hurt a lot at first and it was a scary fall,” Stevenson said. “But yeah, nothing severe happened. We had an X-ray and stuff like that, and it feels good.”

Elsewhere on the team, Grant Nelson played late in the too-tight game against the Colonials, despite Oats and company planning to keep him on the bench due to a knee injury. Nelson provided the spark the Crimson Tide needed, and said after the game that he was feeling fine.

He seemed optimistic that he could play an increased role on Sunday against Saint Mary’s.

“ I’m feeling pretty good, so I’m sure it’s going to be the same — like where I’m pretty much questionable, and it’s going to be day-to-day,” Nelson said. “But I’m going to see how I feel, and it’s going to be a game time decision. But I’m going to stick with my rehab plan, and it seems to be working.”

Nelson’s presence will be huge against a Saint Mary’s team that likes to slow down games and excels at offensive rebounding. It’s a different type of matchup than what the Crimson Tide regularly saw in SEC play.

Alabama and Saint Mary’s are scheduled to tip off at 5:10 p.m. CT Sunday in Cleveland, with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. The game will be aired on TNT.
