Alabama basketball could get elite defender back for March Madness, SEC Tournament

Alabama men’s basketball might soon add some reinforcements.

Derrion Reid, who has missed extensive time this season with a lower-body injury, could play this postseason. In the near future to be specific.

“Derrion was able to practice in some limited capacity,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said Wednesday. “But wasn’t doing 5-on-5 stuff. Provided he has another good day tomorrow morning at practice, he will hopefully be cleared to play for the week, which would be great. Give us a little more depth if we’re fortunate enough to be playing three games in a row.”

Reid hasn’t played since the Auburn game on Feb. 15, nearly a month Before that, he missed several games after Alabama played Georgia on Feb. 1. The true freshman, when healthy, has been a key defender for the Crimson Tide.

No. 5 Alabama will be the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament this week in Nashville. The Crimson Tide will face either Georgia, Oklahoma or Kentucky on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Reid is a former McDonald’s All-American. He was a five-star prospect and the No. 10 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Based on 247Sports’ rankings, Reid is the second-highest rated recruit in program history behind only Colin Sexton. Brandon Miller is third, JD Davison is fourth and Richard Hendrix is fifth.
