Alabama basketball adds Chris Youngblood, 2nd player from transfer portal

Alabama basketball remained active in the transfer portal Saturday afternoon. Nate Oats added his second player of the cycle, this time a guard, Chris Youngblood.

Formerly at South Florida, Youngblood is a well-rounded 6-foot-4, 218-pound scorer. The move marks a return home for Youngblood, who is from Tuscaloosa and played his high school ball in Georgia. He played three seasons at Kennesaw State, starting over 60 games and scoring more than 1,000 points.

This past year, Youngblood averaged a career-high 15.3 points per game. He shot 45.8% from the field and 41.6% from 3-point range, both of which were personal bests. He led South Florida to 25 wins and a run through the NIT. Youngblood topped 25 points in a single game thrice, including his last outing against VCU.

Youngblood should factor into UA’s guard rotation next fall, which has taken a hit through the portal in recent days. Redshirt-freshman Kris Parker, 3-point shooter Davin Cosby Jr. and starter Rylan Griffen are exploring futures elsewhere.

The Tide brought in Aaron Estrada, Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Grant Nelson from smaller schools last year ahead of a Final Four run.

Youngblood and Pepperdine transfer Houston Mallette will be tasked with the efficient 3-point shooting and decision-making that’s been a staple of Oats’ system. Estrada exhausted his collegiate eligibility, the lone UA player to do so. Mark Sears, Wrightsell and Nelson can return and create one of the deeper rosters in the country.
