Alabama baseball shuts out No. 1 Arkansas for series win

Alabama baseball shut out the nation’s top-ranked team on Sunday, beating No. 1 Arkansas 5-0 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The win gave the No. 16 Crimson Tide a 2-1 series victory over the Razorbacks.

The Sunday win took a sterling pitching effort from freshman Zane Thomas, who earned the win with eight scoreless innings.

“It was pretty simple today – it’s about Zane Adams,” Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn said in a UA press release. “This young pup had a tough outing last start on the road, wasn’t as sharp as he usually is, and God bless he was awesome out there today. He had really electric stuff, threw tons of strikes and had unbelievable composure.”

The win was the first shutout of a No. 1 team in Alabama program history. It was the Tide’s first series victory over the nation’s top-ranked team since 2009, when it beat Georgia.

Adams surrendered just four hits and a walk during his eighth innings, striking out five batters. Alton Davis II finished off the shutout in the ninth inning.

The Tide got out to a 1-0 lead on an Ian Petrutz RBI single. The margin jumped to 3-0 after a two-run home run by Bryce Eblin in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alabama added its final two runs in the eight. The win moved UA to 24-12 this season, and a 6-9 mark in SEC play.

The Crimson Tide will be back in action on Tuesday when UAB visits Tuscaloosa. That game will be aired on SEC Network+ at 6 p.m. CT.
