Alabama baseball falls to South Carolina in SEC Tournament

Alabama baseball saw its SEC tournament run come to an early end on Tuesday in Hoover. The Crimson Tide, the No. 7 seed in the tournament, fell to No. 10 South Carolina in the single-elimination round.

The Gamecocks went off offensively, finishing the game with 10 runs, against UA’s five. The loss dropped the Tide to 33-22 overall on the season, 13-18 in SEC play.

Alabama opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking a run on a Willam Hamiter single. The Crimson Tide would add two more in the second inning, leading 3-0 before the Gamecocks began to rally.

It started during a commercial break, when Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” served as the background for a USC highlight reel. The diss track, part of Lamar’s ongoing beef with fellow rapper Drake, seemed to energize South Carolina going into the third.

Gavin Casas got things working, hitting a solo homer off Alabama starter Greg Ferone. Ferone’s day would end shortly thereafter, once Ethan Petry also went yard.

The pitching change wasn’t enough to save the Crimson Tide. With the bases loaded, catcher Dalton Reeves went yard, a grand slam that put the Gamecocks up 6-3.

Alabama found its offensive touch again in the fourth inning, bringing home two runs, cutting the deficit to one. However, South Carolina wasn’t done.

Cole Messina had an excellent game from the plate for the Gamecocks. He added to the lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run, before adding a two-RBI double in the sixth to make it 9-5.

USC would add one more before it was done, running the final score up to 10-5.

South Carolina moves on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Gamecocks will face Arkansas on Wednesday in Hoover.

With the loss, Alabama’s chances of hosting an NCAA Tournament regional dropped significantly. The field of 64 teams will be announced on Monday.

The selection show will be air on ESPN.
