Alabama, Auburn part of top 6 for FIU basketball transfer Denver Jones

One of the best scorers in the transfer portal announced his finalists on Thursday, including both Alabama and Auburn among his potential options.

Denver Jones, from FIU, is considering the Crimson Tide and Tigers for his final two seasons of collegiate eligibility along with De Paul, Florida State, LSU and Oklahoma.

“I’m thankful for all the coaches that recruited me throughout the process,” Jones tweeted.

Jones, listed at 6-foot-4, 190-pounds is a combo guard whose hometown is New Market, Alabama, about a half-an-hour drive from Huntsville. He played high school basketball in Tennessee and averaged 33 points per game in one season. At Garden City (Kansas) Community College, Jones was an All-Region selection. At FIU, Jones was a 35.9% shooter from 3-point range in the last two years, working his way into the starting lineup as a sophomore.

Jones is a talented scorer that led FIU in minutes (33.4 per game), points (20.1 per game) and 3-pointers made (59-for-159). He helped the Panthers win 14 games and posted a season-high 30 points at Rice on March 4.

He was on the Plains and Bruce Peal on Thursday and is set to visit LSU on April 15, Jones told On3. Jones had a home visit with Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide scheduled shortly after he entered the transfer portal two weeks ago. Jones did not provide a timetable for his decision.

Both teams have an opening at guard in the 2023-24 season. Alabama has had two rotational guards enter the portal: Nimari Burnett and five-star recruit Jaden Bradley. Jahvon Quinerly also submitted his name to NBA Draft consideration. The Tide has welcomed in one transfer with ties to Alabama in Wichita State’s Jaykwon Walton. Davin Cosby, a sharp-shooting guard that enrolled early to watch the Tide’s postseason run from the bench, will also be eligible.

On Sunday, the Tigers saw Wendell Green Jr. opt for a pro route as well. It had previously lost four-star prospect Chance Westry to the portal. Like Quinerly and Alabama center Charles Bediako, Green has until May 31 to withdraw their name from the draft pool. 2023 five-star Aden Holloway should factor into Auburn’s guard rotation as well. Auburn is also a finalist for Georgia transfer guard Kario Oquendo, he announced earlier Thursday.
