Alabama, Auburn 2025 QB target already has ‘NFL arm talent’

Saraland all-state quarterback KJ Lacey received an interesting call from his high school head coach this weekend while on a college visit to Florida State.

“I was at FSU and talking to the quarterbacks coach there and coach (Jeff) Kelly called me and asked me to step away for a second when I had a moment,” Lacey said. “He told me Alabama wanted to offer me. I had to kind of go around all day like, ‘Dang, Alabama just offered me.’ It was a cool moment. I put it out of my mind for a while because I wanted to enjoy my visit, but once I left, I definitely embraced it.”

The Crimson Tide offer was the 10th for the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Lacey since he helped Saraland win the Class 6A state title in early December. His other offers include Auburn, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M and UCF, among others.

“I’ve been waiting for that offer because Alabama is a top college,” Lacey said. “I’m trying to get all my top colleges so then I can pick where I want to go and where I best fit in. Obviously, I wanted to get that Alabama offer, and I want to bring some others in as well.”

In leading the Spartans to their first state football title, Lacey completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,177 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was intercepted just 5 times.

“The guy is not only extremely talented and can make all the throws, but the big intangible with him is how he not only competes but handles the clutch moments in the game,” Kelly told AL.com following Auburn and Ole Miss offers last month. “That is off the chart. I really think he is just scratching the surface of how good he can be.”

Lacey, with two years still remaining in high school, said he has no timetable in making a college decision. “I’ll figure it out as it goes,” he said.

QB Country founder David Morris has trained Lacey since he was in the fifth grade.

“Honestly, I think he has a chance to be the best to ever come out of here (Mobile),” Morris said. “He has an incredible combination of accuracy, anticipation and arm strength. He’s real even keeled, really smart. He doesn’t take long to get in a rhythm. KJ is one of those guys that makes it all look easy, which is one of those traits the really special ones have. He’s really good.”

How good?

Maybe as good as Alabama’s latest quarterback.

“He reminds me of Bryce Young,” Morris said. “The way he’s real instinctive in the pocket. He never panics, always moves the right way. I told (Ole Miss coach) Lane (Kiffin) when they offered him that I thought he was like Bryce Young with more upside because he’s already bigger.

“Coach Kiffin said, ‘Dude, I love you, but you can’t say that.’ I said, ‘I’m just telling you that is who he is to me.’ He plays in the pocket and makes things look easy like Bryce. And just arm talent that is really, really special. He has NFL arm talent right now.”

Lacey said he doesn’t have any more college trips planned at this point but said he would likely go to LSU in March. In the meantime, he will continue to work on his craft.

“Just getting more accurate, getting my arm strength up and getting a little more IQ on the field,” he said. “As a team, we won’t have exactly the same team, but we have a lot of guys back. We just have to keep working and stay hungry.”

Lacey said he hasn’t heard anything yet from his teammate and Alabama commit Ryan Williams about his new Alabama offer. Williams, this year’s Mr. Football in Alabama, is already committed to the Crimson Tide.

“I think he has been out of town, but I’m pretty sure he’ll hit me up about it when he gets back,” Lacey said with a laugh.
