Alabama athletics: ‘Brandon (Miller) remains an active member of our team’

Alabama star freshman will not only play Wednesday night but will remain an “active member” of the Crimson Tide.

The school released an unattributed statement after Miller’s attorney and UA athletic director Greg Byrne provided updates on the information stated by police investigators yesterday, which placed Miller and freshman Jaden Bradley at the scene of the Jan. 15 shooting on the Tuscaloosa strip.

“UA Athletics continues to cooperate fully with law enforcement in the on-going investigation of this tragic situation. Based on all the information we have received, Brandon Miller is not considered a suspect in this case, only a cooperative witness. Today’s statement from Brandon’s lawyer adds additional context that the University has considered as part of its review of the facts. Based on all of the facts we have gathered, Brandon remains an active member of our team.”

Miller has continued his rise from a five-star recruit to one of the most talented players in the country. He became the quickest freshman in program history to reach 500 points, doing so in 27 games. Miller enters the No. 2 Tide’s matchup against South Carolina averaging 19.7 points per contest with a 45.9 field-goal percentage.

Miller’s status for tonight’s matchup against South Carolina was revealed shortly before UA emailed its statement to reporters. A clip of Byrne on the College Gameday podcast aired on the Paul Finebaum show and detailed a bit more about when the school knew of Miller’s involvement. In a statement provided by Miller’s attorney shortly before that, Miller was said to not have seen the firearm used to kill Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, but drove it to the scene.

“We found out some new facts yesterday. We found out some new facts today. Here’s what we know: Brandon was not there for the verbal altercation. Brandon was already on his way to pick up Darius when Darius texted him. Brandon never left his vehicle and was not involved in the collection of the weapon. The shooting occurred just seconds after Brandon arrived. Brandon has been a fully cooperating witness and is not a suspect,” Byrne said.
