Alabama A&M campus police officer shot student in dorm stairwell shootout, ALEA says

A student was injured during a shootout with an Alabama A&M University police officer Monday afternoon, state authorities said Monday night.

Earlier Monday, law enforcement characterized the incident as a “officer-involved shooting” but did not say whether the injured party was an officer or someone else.

The campus police officer, who was not publicly identified, encountered the gun-toting student in the Knight Complex residence hall when gunfire was exchanged, according to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sgt. Jeremy Burkett and Alabama A&M University Police Chief Montrez Payton.

The student was injured and taken to Huntsville Hospital with undisclosed injuries, Burkett said.

The officer was not hurt.

The officer was on the fifth floor of the Knight Complex conducting a routine patrol around 1:50 p.m. Monday when the officer heard shots fired below him, Payton said.

As the officer responded to see where the shots were coming from, he made contact with a person in the southwest stairwell of the residence hall.

“Multiple shots were exchanged in that stairwell,” Payton said. “An individual was hit multiple times.”

“Unfortunately, we’re saddened by these occurrences and also, these things are starting to become more frequent as we see in today’s climate,” the chief told reporters shortly after the shooting.

Just seven months ago, the Knight Complex was the scene of another shooting.

The Aug. 22 shooting injured two people and led to the arrests of two suspects.

That shooting was termed as an isolated incident stemming from an altercation between two people.
