Alabama alumni top NFL in touchdowns in 2023

During the 2023 NFL regular season, 18 Alabama alumni combined to score 106 touchdowns.

That was the most for any group who played at the same college program – by a lot. Thirteen who played at Oklahoma combined to score 65 NFL touchdowns for the second-most during the 2023 regular season.

In the 2010 NFL regular season, one player from Alabama scored a touchdown – running back Kenneth Darby, who reached the end zone three times for the St. Louis Rams.

Alabama’s NFL touchdown production has been climbing from that point and took a big jump in 2018, when 12 alumni scored 71 TDs. That broke the school record established the previous season when 11 former Crimson Tide players had scored 45.

Twenty Alabama alumni scored 85 touchdowns in 2019, 20 scored 83 TDs in 2020, 20 scored 96 TDs in 2021 and 19 scored 100 TDs in 2022.

Because of Darby’s 2010 touchdowns, former Alabama players have scored touchdowns in 48 consecutive seasons – every one since coming up empty in 1975.

In 1975, nine Alabama alumni played in at least one NFL regular-season game. Three are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame – New England Patriots guard John Hannah, New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath and Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler. But none of the nine scored a touchdown.

In 2023, three former Alabama players scored at least 10 touchdowns – Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts with 15, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry with 12 and Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs with 11.

Other former Alabama players who scored touchdowns in 2023 included:

· Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford with nine.

· Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson with nine.

· Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris with eight.

· Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley with eight.

· Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith with seven.

· Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs with six.

· Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper with five.

· Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle with four.

· Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Julio Jones with three.

· Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Willams with three.

· Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy with two.

· Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch with one.

· Buffalo Bills running back Damien Harris with one.

· Indianapolis Colts safety Ronnie Harrison with one.

· Cincinnati Bengals tight end Irv Smith Jr. with one.

Five other Alabama colleges had alumni score touchdowns in the 2023 season.

Four former Auburn players accounted for eight touchdowns – four by New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, two by Jacksonville Jaguars Tank Bigsby and one apiece by Dallas Cowboys cornerback Noah Igbinoghene and New York Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah.

Auburn has had at least two alumni reach the end zone in the NFL in every season since coming up empty in 1976. In 1976, the former Tigers in the NFL were three centers, one guard, one punter and one safety.

Auburn’s high mark for collective NFL touchdowns came in 2005, when seven alumni combined for 39 TDs. Running backs Stephen Davis of the Carolina Panthers and Rudi Johnson of the Cincinnati Bengals scored 12 touchdowns apiece that season.

West Alabama alumnus Tyreek Hill scored 13 touchdowns in 2023 as a Miami Dolphins wide receiver.

Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell, who started his college career at Alabama A&M, scored seven touchdowns as a rookie.

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Gerald Everett scored three touchdowns in 2023, and he started his college career at UAB and finished at South Alabama.

Former South Alabama wide receiver Jalen Tolbert scored two touchdowns for the Cowboys, and former UAB cornerback Darious Williams scored one touchdown for the Jaguars.
