Alabama All-Stars look for another basketball sweep in Mississippi

Fairhope star Spence Sims has pulled out of this weekend’s Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.

Pirates coach Solomon Johnson said Sims suffered a slight knee injury early in the week and didn’t want to risk anything more serious.

“He hated to miss the game,” Johnson said. “I think his knee was just tender, and he wanted to make sure he was OK.”

Johnson said Sims still plans to walk on at Alabama. He said he thinks Sims can be a factor for the Crimson Tide in the future.

“It’s going to take him a little time to get acclimated to that SEC style, but once he figures it out, his work ethic will definitely make him a force,” he said.

This years’ Alabama-Mississippi games will be held Saturday at Mississippi College. The girls game tips off at noon. The boys will follow at 2.

Hewitt-Trussville’s Tonya Hunter will coach the Alabama girls team along with Susan Moore’s Natasha Smallwood. Patrick Harding, who just led Buckhorn to its second straight 6A state title, will coach the boys along with Valley’s Marshon Harper.

Top players for the girls team include Hewitt-Trussville’s Jordan Hunter, Good Hope’s Ivey Maddox, Auburn’ Syriah Daniels and Hazel Green’s Leah Brooks. Top players from the boys include Mountain Brook’s Ty Davis, Huntsville’s Caleb Harrison and JAG’s Jamicah Adair.

Alabama swept the series last year with the girls beating Mississippi 88-74 to improve to 19-14 in the series. The boys won 91-72 and now hold an 18-15 in the series, which was first played in Florence at the University of North Alabama in 1991.
