Alabama adds son of former Saban assistant to DeBoer’s recruiting staff

Alabama’s support staff welcomed back a familiar face on Friday. Jerret McElwain, son of current Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain, will return to Tuscaloosa as an assistant director of player personnel.

McElwain will join a growing recruiting staff under Kalen DeBoer. UA’s new head coach has assembled a range of familiar faces and respected recruiters nationally. McElwain represents both.

McElwain worked under then-wide reciever coach Billy Napier on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff in 2014 as a player personnel assistant while McElwain was a student. Per his resume, McElwain assisted the Tide’s recruiting staff when hosting prospects for official visits, among other things. His father, Jim McElwain, was Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2008-11.

FootballScoop reported on Jan. 13 that McElwain would follow DeBoer back to Tuscaloosa, Though he was spotted on campus during new Washington coach Jedd Fisch’s introductory news conference. McElwain updated his Twitter page Friday with Alabama branding, announcing his new role in the process.

Jerret McElwain also worked in the scouting departments at Michigan and Washington. Along with Courtney Morgan (Washington) and Jatavis Sanders (North Carolina State), Alabama will attempt to keep its status as one of the premier places for talent nationally. While UA hasn’t officially announced any hires other than DeBoer, presumed coaches have been out on the recruiting trail.

Alabama will host some of the nation’s top prospects this weekend for its Junior Day. DeBoer’s first spring game is scheduled for April 13.
