Alabama $150 tax rebate: Haven’t received your money? What you need to know

Almost 2 million Alabamians are in line to receive up to $300 in a special one-time tax rebate check. If you haven’t received your money, the Alabama Department of Revenue wants you to know they are working to get all the funds delivered.

“The Alabama Department of Revenue is working diligently to process more than 1.9 million paper and direct deposit rebate checks in a timely manner. We are aware of the importance of these funds, and we are making every effort to expedite the processing while ensuring accuracy,” the agency said in a statement. “Please allow time for the rebate to be received.”

The department began issuing rebates on Dec. 1 via direct deposit or paper check. Rebates are $150 for single filers and $300 for married couples filing jointly. There are no income cutoffs to qualify, but recipients must have filed a 2021 individual income tax return with ALDOR on or before Oct. 17, 2022.

Payments will be made based on how you received your 2021 tax refund. Direct deposits will be made to the same bank account that was used to issue your 2021 tax refund. If you did not receive a 2021 tax year refund, you will get your rebate by paper check. Paper checks will also be issued to those whose banking information has changed or who received a 2021 refund using a tax preparer’s account.

The rebates will not be subject to Alabama income taxes. Rebates will cost the state some $393 million which comes from a $2.8 billion surplus in the Education Trust Fund.
