AL.com’s SEC football players of the week for Week 1
Here are AL.com’s SEC football players of the week for Week 1 of the 2024 season:
Offense
Diego Pavia, QB, Vanderbilt — Pavia, a transfer from New Mexico State, helped the Commodores snap a 10-game losing streak with a 34-27 overtime victory over Virginia Tech. The senior from Albuquerque, N.M., completed 12 of 16 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for 104 yards, including the game-winning 4-yard scoring run in overtime.
Defense
Kyle Kennard, EDGE, South Carolina — In his first game with the Gamecocks after transferring from Georgia Tech, Kennard was a dominant force in a 23-19 victory over Old Dominion. The senior from Atlanta totaled four tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Special teams
Peyton Woodring, K, Georgia — Woodring had a near-perfect day for the Bulldogs in a 34-3 victory over Clemson in Atlanta. The sophomore from Lafayette, La., made both of his field-goal attempts (including a career-best 55-yarder in the second quarter), made all four extra-point attempts and had six touchbacks on seven kickoffs.
