AL.comâs SEC football players of the week for Week 1
Here are AL.com’s SEC football players of the week for Week 1 of the 2023 season:
Offense
Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss — The Louisiana Tech transfer set a school record with four touchdown receptions in his Ole Miss debut, catching three of them in the first quarter of a 73-7 rout of Mercer. Harris scored on receptions of 38, 28, 20 and 16 yards, catching six passes for 133 yards overall.
Defense
Jaylin Simpson, DB, Auburn — The senior from Brunswick, Ga., came up with two huge takeaways in a 59-14 rout of UMass. Simpson returned a fumble 13 yards to set up a touchdown in the second quarter, then scored one of his own on a 50-yard interception return in the fourth. He also added three tackles.
Special teams
Barion Brown, KR, Kentucky — The sophomore wide receiver returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in a 44-14 victory over Ball State. He also added three receptions for 39 yards on offense.
