AL.com Top 25: Alabama football on the brink of a chaotic end of 2023
The 2023 college football season has come to an end and my goodness did it end in grand fashion. Both the Iron Bowl and Michigan-Ohio State come down to final drives, and conference title berths are clinched in overtime.
This time next week, we’ll be deciding four teams for the final four-team playoff of the CFP era. So, lets play a mini game of ‘MythBusters’.
Myth: Ohio State still has a shot at the playoff.
Fact: Georgia losing next week is the CFP committee’s worst nightmare, they just won’t admit it.
Fact: Washington and Florida State, not certain locks for the playoff and it’s becoming a much larger elephant in the room.
Fact: Let’s rank some teams
No. 25 Kansas (8-4): First time the Jayhawks have reached eight wins since 2008.
No. 24 Liberty (12-0): Small chance Liberty could sneak into the New Year’s Six. They’ll need a Tulane loss, most likely.
No. 23 Clemson (8-4): A bowl game gives Clemson a chance to reach the nine-win plateau. Not bad.
No. 22 James Madison (11-1): The Dukes are going bowling. LET’S PARTY!!
No. 21 Toledo (11-1): Like Liberty, chances of reaching the NY6 are small but still a great season for the Rockets.
No. 20 NC State (9-3): NC State has a very NC State-like season, again.
No. 19 Oklahoma State (9-3): Oklahoma State has a chance to end the Big 12 era for Texas in hilarious fashion.
No. 18 Notre Dame (8-4): It feels like a lot of, “what could’ve been” for Notre Dame in 2023.
No. 17 Tennessee (8-4): Same with Tennessee.
No. 16 Oregon State (8-4): Same with Oregon State
No. 15 Arizona (9-3): A great season by the Wildcats, longshot at a NY6 bowl.
No. 14 Oklahoma (10-2): Imagine if they don’t stumble at Kansas or Oklahoma State.
No. 13 Tulane (11-1): Four quarters away from back-to-back NY6 bowls. Impressive as hell.
No. 12 Ole Miss (10-2): Ole Miss fans desperately wish the 12-team playoff could begin this season.
No. 11 Penn State (10-2): Penn State is going to sneak into the NY6, following losses to Michigan and Ohio State. James Franklin can’t keep getting away with it!
No. 10 LSU (9-3): Nine wins and a potential Heisman winner? Not a bad season.
No. 9 Missouri (10-2): Ten-win Missouri!?! Ten-win Missouri.
No. 8 Ohio State (11-1): Third-straight loss to Michigan. Yikes.
No. 7 Alabama (11-1): Could Alabama be win-and-in the playoff? Possibly.
No. 6 Oregon (11-1): A playoff spot AND the Heisman on the line Friday night in Vegas? Yes, please!
No. 5 Texas (11-1): Texas could take a lot of stress away from the committee with a win, and they could with a loss as well.
No. 4 Washington (10-0): Washington survived rival Washington State but might’ve feel more damaged coming out of a win. They almost need a win, an impressive win to feel good about playoff hopes.
No. 3 Florida State (10-0): It’s all so simple for FSU, win and they’re win.
No. 2 Michigan (10-0): A win, and they’re playoff bound for a third-straight season.
No. 1 Georgia (10-0): 6 days till Alabama.
