AJ McCarron, Marquis Maze critical of Alabama after Tennessee loss: ‘They got beat down’
It isn’t every year Tennessee beats Alabama, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that former Crimson Tide players reacted to the disappointing loss in the aftermath of the Vols’ 52-29 win in Knoxville.
Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron and former receiver Marquis Maze took very different approaches to their break down of the game.
McCarron, who does ESPN radio every weekend, was surprised with the way Alabama’s defense played, especially against Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt.

The receiver had 207 yards and five touchdowns on just six catches.
“I don’t think they realized he was playing,” McCarron, who played at Alabama from 2010-2013, said on “The Wrap-Up.” “The guy was catching everything and scoring every time he got the ball. …
“Almost every time he caught the ball was a touchdown. Bama’s secondary was bad tonight. (Alabama coach Nick) Saban pointed it out, a lot of mistakes in the first half and those kind of really just spilled over unlike a Saban-esque defense. Really, no corrections were made from a player standpoint at halftime. They got beat down tonight.”
Meanwhile, Maze took to social media for a tirade on both Alabama’s team and individual play.
“Some of the Bama fans can’t admit them folks wanted that game more than our players,” Maze tweeted. “Yes, the refs made some bad calls, but we, as a team, made it where those call’s mattered! I don’t care about no moral victories. Call a spade a spade.”
It didn’t stop there.
“These the most message-sending players I ever seen,” he tweeted. “Everything you thinking, show us. Quit all that crying cause you lost and fix the problems and go win this Natty. The standard is never to give up no damn 52 points, so enough of all that talk. Show it!”

Chase McGrath made a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give No. 6 Tennessee a 52-49 victory over No. 3 Alabama on Saturday.
As soon as the kick knuckle-balled through the uprights, some of the more than 100,000 fans stormed the field to celebrate the Volunteers ending a 15-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide. It didn’t take long for the goal posts to go down.
Hendon Hooker drove the Vols 45 yards in 18 seconds to set up the winner.
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, a game-time decision because of a sprained right shoulder two weeks ago, completed 35 passes for 455 yards and two TDs.
