Airbnb bans use of indoor security cameras

Airbnb is banning the use of indoor security cameras in all properties, an effort the homestay company says will “prioritize the privacy of our community.”

Historically, Airbnb allowed the use of indoor security cameras in common areas of listings, such as hallways and living rooms, as long as property owners disclosed the devices on the listing page before booking and made sure the cameras were clearly visible. Cameras could not be located in private spaces such as sleeping areas and bathrooms.

Airbnb’s new policy means that security cameras are not allowed inside listings, regardless of location, purpose or prior disclosure, the company said in a press release.

The new policy will set more comprehensive rules on the use of outdoor security cameras and other devices, including noise decibel monitors. While the security technology will still be allowed, Airbnb will require hosts to disclose the location of the devices before guests book.

Airbnb says that the majority of its 7.7 million listings do not have security cameras, and the new changes will only impact a small subset of properties on the platform, reports The Telegraph. The rules will go into effect on April 30 and Airbnb says any violations will be investigated and hosts caught breaking the rules could be removed.
