Air Force instructor pilot dies in Veteran’s Day weekend diving incident off Florida Panhandle

A 34-year-old U.S. Air Force pilot instructor died over Veteran’s Day weekend following an unsuccessful water rescue attempt off the Florida Panhandle, according to authorities.

The Okaloosa County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office said the man was free-diving — diving without underwater breathing apparatus — about a mile south of East Pass near Destin when he went missing about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The body was found the following morning — Veteran’s Day — in 80 feet of water, about 50 feet where he had last been seen, according to WJHG. The official cause of death has not been released an the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Sunday morning, Eglin Air Force 33rd Fighter Wing issued a statement saying the deceased diver was 34-year-old Air Force Capt. Nicholas Brown, an instructor pilot for the 58th Fighter Squadron stationed at Eglin. He was a native of Austin, Texas.

“We’re mourning the loss of a valued teammate today,” said Col. Dave Skalicky, Commander of the 33rd Fighter Wing, in the statement. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Capt. Brown’s family, friends, fellow Nomads and all those affected by this tragic loss.”
