Gardendale High School turned the Class 6A North Super Sectional wrestling tournament into a family affair.

All four of the Powe brothers captured individual North Super Sectional titles – Crue at 106 pounds, Demarcus at 120, Isaiah at 145 and Daishun at 152 – Saturday at Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex as the AHSAA North Super Sectional Wrestling Championships concluded the Class 7A, Class 6A and Class 1A/4A competition in the first session. Class 5A started its North Super Section meet Saturday afternoon and will conclude Saturday night.

Demarcus Powe earned a victory over previously unbeaten Brodie Christmas of Mortimer Jordan, after Christmas couldn’t continue after suffering an injury. Isaiah Powe (51-0) and Daishun Powe (52-0) remain undefeated this season.

All four Powe brothers advance to next week’s state tournament in Huntsville. In fact, the top six Super Sectional finishers in each weight class in Classes 7A, 6A and 1A-4A advance, while the top four finishers in each weight class advance in Class 5A.

The Powe family’s success helped the Rockets finish runner-up in 6A, as Mortimer Jordan took the 6A team title with 222 points. Gardendale finished with 214 points.

In 7A, Vestavia Hills won the team competition with 239 points, followed by defending state champ Thompson with 226.5. Ashville won the 1A-4A team title with 214.5 points, followed by defending state champ Weaver with 204 points.

Here’s a look at some of other notable performances:

– Decatur’s Oliver Howard (22-0) continued his defeated season by winning the 160-pound individual title in Class 6A.

– Weaver’s Joshua Johannson (38-0) won the 170-pound individual title in Class 1A-4A. He won the 160-pound state title last year when he also finished with an undefeated record.

– At 132 pounds, Dora’s Damon Clayton (34-0) won in Class 1A-4A.

– Dora’s Jonathan Foster (36-0) pinned Weaver’s Anthony Usry (40-3) to win the 182-pound title in Class 1A-4A and stay undefeated. Foster won a 170-pound state title last season.

– Madison County’s Mason Ellis (47-1) pinned Pleasant Valley’s Zeke Curvin to win the 195-pound individual title. Ellis won a 195-pound state title in 2022.

– White Plains’ Mason Hahm (49-2) pinned Dora’s Jayden Rouse (38-1) in the 120-pound final in Class 1A-4A, giving Rouse his first loss of the season.

– Huntsville’s Kiyan Simon (45-1) won the 106-ound title in Class 7A with a 6-4 decision over Hewitt-Trussville’s Clark Box.

– Spain Park’s Bradley Williams won the 138-pound title in Class 7A with a 13-11 decision over Huntsville’s Jake Ciccolella (43-2).

– Spain Park’s Rayshod Burts (49-3) earned a 2-0 decision over Bob Jones’ Maddox Sunderman in the 285-pound final in Class 7A.
