Mountain Brook High School had never won an AHSAA wrestling championship – not in the traditional state tournament which began in 1959 or the State Duals tournament which started in 2017. Until Friday.

The Spartans, coached by Justin Ransom, defeated Mortimer Jordan 32-27 in Class 6A Wrestling Duals Finals at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

“We got the monkey off our back,” Ransom said. “We challenged our guys to finish the drill, and they dadgum did it.”

The AHSAA Wrestling Duals Championships continued Friday with three remaining duals finals and consolation finals. The AHSAA Girls’ Wrestling Tournament individual finals are also being held at Bill Harris Arena Friday. That tournament champion is decided by total points in the 13 individual weight divisions.

All matches are being live-streamed over the NFHS Network’s subscriber-based platform.

Mountain Brook (14-4) took control by winning five individual matches in a row, including pinfall wins by Allen Baker at 195 pounds, William Courtenay at 200 pounds and Daniel Ellis at 285 pounds. Mortimer Jordan (31-3), coached by Joshua Pate, then rallied with four straight wins by Caleb Wright at 113 pounds, Aiden Morris at 120 pounds, Brodie Christmas at 126 pounds and Cruz Rainwater at 132 pounds.

Ransom praised his “smaller guys” ability to finish matches and avoid pinfall losses. Mountain Brook’s Nathan McCain clinched the team victory with a 5-3 decision over John Leon at 145 pounds in the next-to-last individual match.

“I’m looking forward to chasing another state title in February,” said Ransom, referring to the traditional state tournament in Huntsville).

In the consolation match, Hartselle (17-2), coached by Joe Hill, earned a 36-35 victory over Wetumpka (14-3) to take third place at the CrossPlex.

Each team won seven matches, but the Tigers had four wins by pin and Wetumpka had three to account for the 1-point team win. In the next-to-last match, at 138 pounds, Wetumpka’s Tyler Mann defeated Hartselle’s Ethan England 5-1, but England’s ability to last the entire match clinched the victory, despite the Tigers forfeiting the final match at 145 pounds.
