AHSAA wrestling: Champions crowned on final day of tournament

Stanhope Elmore High School senior Connor Russo avenged his only loss of the 2023 high school wrestling season in the biggest way possible Saturday afternoon as the 2023 68th AHSAA State Wrestling Championships conclude at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.

Matched up with defending state champion Aiden Knight, who handed Russo his only loss last week in the Class 6A Super Sectional finals, the Mustangs wrestler squeezed out a 3-2 win to finish the season at 38-1. More importantly, he won the Class 6A 170-pound weight class state title – and handed Knight (86-1) his only loss in of the season for the McAdory senior.

Knight’s own strong performance earned his team 20 points and a strong bunch of teammates put the Yellow Jackets over the top as McAdory, coached Blake Dutton, emerged as the 2023 Class 6A state champions with 160.5 points.

The Yellow Jackets did have three wrestlers claim individual titles with Hudson Waldrop (89-2) winning at 126 pounds, Christion Griggs (74-3) at 160 pounds, and Savian Graham (82-4) at 182 pounds.

Vestavia Hills, coached by Tee Adams, captured the 7A state championship with 210 points, Jasper, coached by Tripp Otis, claimed the 5A title with 116.5 points and Weaver, coached by Andy Fulmer, won the 1A/4A state championship with 105 points edging Dora by four points.

Russo’s victory had to help him put last week’s tough loss to Knight behind him. He earned 24 of his team’s 26.5 total points.

Joshua Johannson, who earned Most Outstanding wrestler honors in Class 1A/4A, won the 170-pound championship with a pin over Layton Pohl of New Hope at 3:06 in the finals to clinch his fourth individual state championship with a perfect 42-0 season. It also helped the Bearcats pull ahead of Dora for good.

Jasper, which won the Class 5A duals title in January, won the state title over runner-up Scottsboro in dramatic fashion when junior Cole Carter pinned Gulf Shores’ Lucas Salcedo (33-2) in the 195-pound finals at 3:48 to break a tie at the top.

The Vikings finished with 116.5 points to take first place thanks to his six points earned with the pin. Scottsboro finished second at 110.5. Carter’s six points for the pin provided the final difference.

Arab’s Will Caneer (53-1), who won the 5A individual championship at 220 pounds, was named the Class 5A most outstanding wrestler. He closed out his senior season with a pin over Logan Hall (51-5) of Moody in the final match at 1:21. Pelham’s Seth Branham was selected Class 6A most outstanding wrestler, and Hewitt-Trussville’s Hunter Jones was chosen by the coaches as 7A most outstanding wrestler. Both won 220-pound individual titles.

Vestavia Hills had just one individual champion in the final round, but had a strong showing from top to bottom to seal the 7A title early. Senior Andrew Sykes (18-2) won at 220 pounds with a 3-1 win in the finals over Chelsea’s Kalob Johnstone (42-3) to emerge as the Rebels’ only individual winner.

Montevallo senior Gavin Monk (54-0) had a 3-1 decision over Jack Von Eschenbach of St. John Paul II (57-3) in the 145-pound Class 1A/4A finals to finish the season undefeated. Competing in the same weight class in Class 6A, Isaiah Powe of Gardendale topped off a 54-0 season by pinning Pike Road senior Jake Bryant at 2:41 in the finals.

Isaiah’s younger brother, junior Daishun Powe (56-0) also posted an undefeated season with a 12-4 major decision win over Hartselle senior Payton Roberts (35-7) in the152-pound 6A finals.

Hayden senior Bentley Briscoe (57-0) needed just 48 seconds to close his undefeated season with a pin over Moody junior Skylar Gomer (27-8) in the Class 5A 152-pound finals.

Ranburne senior 285-pounder Carson Hall (50-0) pinned Prattville Christian junior Aiden Cockrell (37-9) in the final match of the 1A/4A division to claim his third straight state championship. He finished the season with 42 pins.
