AHSAA Winter reclass: Multiple champions on the move

Multiple state basketball champions will play in different classifications next year.

The AHSAA’s Central Board approved the winter reclassification Thursday for the next two years. Member schools are reclassified every two years in accordance with the AHSAA constitution and bylaws. Fall alignments were released in December.

State basketball champions moving are Mars Hill (2A to 3A) and Trinity (3A to 4A). Those schools are moving by the private school competitive balance factor. Both Mars Hill teams played for state titles this year with the boys winning. The Trinity girls won their second straight 3A title.

Other private school basketball teams moving are: Covenant Christian (1A to 2A), Whitesburg Christian (2A to 3A by enrollment), Bayside Academy (moves down from 4A to 3A by enrollment), UMS-Wright (4A to 5A by enrollment) and Madison Academy (moves down from 5A to 4A). Prattville Christian remained in 4A. Decatur Heritage remained in 2A.

“I want to thank the Central Board and the AHSAA staff,” executive director Alvin Briggs said. “As always, it was a complex task. Everyone worked together to find the best solution as we move forward.”

Briggs said more than 190,000 student-athletes are expected to participate in AHSAA sports activities during the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years.
